The Prevent Strategy

From 1st July 2015, all schools have a due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and or violent extremism; this duty is known as The Prevent Duty (DFE, 2015).

Prevent is one element of the Government’s Counter Terrorism Strategy.

The Prevent Strategy aims to prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. Institutions including schools and academies have a statutory duty to address the risk of any form of radicalisation and extremism.

Enrich Academy staff complete Prevent Training and/or WRAP (Working to Raise Awareness of Prevent) training. This is refreshed on an annual basis. All staff are confident about the referral process in the academy if they suspect a student is being radicalised or drawn into extremist behaviour.

Our curriculum ensures our students have the opportunity to explore and discuss many challenges the world faces, including radicalisation and extremism. We encourage our students to think critically and explore ideas in a safe environment. We encourage our students to develop the skills, confidence and understanding to develop self-esteem and make a full and active contribution to society.

Tackling Online Extremism

We stay informed on local safeguarding developments by subscribing to the Department for Education’s Regional Coordinators newsletter, which provides regular updates on local information and training opportunities. We also subscribe to Educate Against Hate to access up-to-date and relevant lesson resources. In addition, we have a Prevent Risk Assessment in place to help identify and manage any risks related to radicalisation and extremism.

The internet and social media can sometimes be used by individuals with extreme views to target vulnerable young people. It’s important that communities remain vigilant and know how to report concerns. If you come across illegal terrorist content, images, or videos online, you can report it anonymously using the contact details below or by contacting Lorna Wright, Prevent Lead.
